Connecting the Future: Huawei

Huawei is a leading global information and communications technology (ICT) solutions provider with products and services that are used in more than 170 countries/regions, serving over one-third of the world’s population. Huawei’s vision for sustainability is to connect the future, which unambiguously communicates the ambition of Huawei to bridge the digital divide, build harmonious communities and make the world greener.

Huawei’s approach to sustainable products and services is built upon the circular economy concept, which seeks to improve resource and energy efficiency and enable the recycling of raw materials, components, and products. Huawei integrates eco-design and circular economy practices into the entire product lifecycle, and it has created a circular economy business model, including cradle-to-cradle practices for sustainable resource use.

At the product design stage, Huawei aims to maximise a product’s lifespan and ensure easy take-back, maintenance, recycling and reuse. Huawei’s design approach also adopts the lifecycle assessment methodology and tools in selecting recyclable or compostable materials, thereby minimising material use. Thanks to these measures, in 2015 Huawei reduced the amount of waste sent to landfills to 2.03%.

In China and Malaysia, the company set up an online device recycling system that allows consumers to trade in old phones and receive subsidies for new ones. This system complements Huawei’s existing Global Green Recycling Programme, which comprises 444 recycling stations across 23 countries and regions. Huawei is committed to providing its customers with green and efficient products and solutions that consume less energy, lowering operating expenses (OPEX) and carbon emissions.

To promote the sustainable production and consumption of ICT products and solutions, Huawei has been committed to pursuing the leading third-party environmental labels to represent its products. The entire range of Huawei’s campus network switches have been certified by TÜV Rheinland’s Green Product Mark, demonstrating their superiority in terms of human and environmental health protection, resource efficiency and climate change mitigation.

Mr Kun Niu, Director of Switch Products, Huawei said:

“Huawei has always been a supporter of the green philosophy in the ICT industry. We have always followed an environmental strategy of ‘green channel, green operations, green partners, green world’. The latest strategic collaboration with TÜV Rheinland on green product certification means that Huawei's electronic and electrical products will be able to secure international acceptance more quickly. It also signals Huawei's commitment to the pursuit of sustainable development. By joining forces with TÜV Rheinland we hope to spur the onset of a green revolution throughout the entire ICT industry.”

Huawei has also engaged TÜV Rheinland as an external assurance provider to verify the reliability, fairness, and transparency of its corporate sustainability report, published annually since 2008.
