These incidents have stirred concern and served as a wake-up call for organizations to pay attention to the importance of data protection and compliance to the law.

The National Privacy Commission (NPC) of the Philippines, organized the Privacy Awareness Week (PAW) 2018 last May with the theme "Protecting the Filipino's Right to Data Privacy." The celebration also served as the venue of the first ever National Data Privacy Conference in the country, with over 2,000 Data Protection Officers (DPOs) present, coming from various industries including academe, civil society, top corporations, and the government.

Committed to its thrust of providing quality and safety in all aspects of life, TŰV Rheinland celebrated PAW by being a partner exhibitor during the event. As an advocate of data protection, TUV Rheinland is equipped with capabilities tailored to address the needs of a company in ensuring their compliance to the DPA while remaining competitive in the international market. TÜV Rheinland has become the first independent testing, inspection and certification services organization to offer Personnel Certification for Data Protection Officers (DPO) in the Philippines. The move follows the signing of a cooperation agreement with the National Association of Data Protection Officers of the Philippines (NADPOP).

The new DPO Personnel Certification Scheme can provide companies, and the Philippine Government, with the confidence that businesses are well prepared and has the needed competence to comply with the data privacy regulations by having on board trained and certified DPOs. Offering a comprehensive grounding in local conditions, it also corresponds to international laws, such as APEC-CPBR and GDPR, and technical applications using relevant ISO guidelines.

In cooperation with the National Data Protection Officers of the Philippines (NADPOP), TÜV Rheinland Philippines is currently offering Data Protection Officer Training and Certification Program, a 5-day intensive training for appointed DPOs which delves into the Data Privacy Act of 2012, its IRR, the duties and responsibilities of a DPO, and an introduction to international standards. After the training, participants will take an exam that will qualify them as a TÜV Rheinland Certified Data Protection Officer to which after, they earn a certificate and a signet that is valid for three years.

The Privacy Awareness Week or PAW is an annual international effort to draw public attention towards privacy issues and the importance of protecting personal information. It is held across member countries of the Asia Pacific Privacy Authorities (APPA) Forum. This year marks the second time that the Philippines will officially celebrate PAW in solidarity with other APPA members and other privacy adherents all over the world.
