TÜV Rheinland announced its plans to further develop a regional GDPR centre of excellence in Japan aimed at helping its clients across industry sectors. This would address the rapidly growing need in Japan to better understand and implement GDPR requirements.

“Combining our expertise in product testing, information protection, privacy engineering, and GDPR regulations, we are one of the few organizations in Japan that can bring this level of expertise to market”, commented, Tobias Schweinfurter, President & CEO TÜV Rheinland Japan.

GDPR Consulting services are currently already being offered to its clients in North America & Europe. Additionally, TÜV Rheinland has been leading the privacy assessment area since last year, when it’s “Global Centre of Excellence for IoT Privacy”, built on GDPR requirements, was launched in Cologne. The Centre of Excellence has since been offering a complete solution for data protection in the Internet of Things (IoT) and, as a result, is positioning itself as a leader in the rapidly growing global IoT market when it comes to protecting people’s privacy. This is achieved with privacy certification, consultation, and training programs for product manufacturers and system suppliers.

The EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) demands full consent and transparency into how personal data is processed. It will become enforceable through EU member state law from May 25, 2018, and is intended to harmonize data protection laws throughout the European Union (EU) by applying a single set of requirements that is binding in each EU member state. Most notably for Japanese businesses, GDPR not only applies to organizations located within the EU, but also to organizations located outside the EU if they offer goods or services that process personal information that originates in the EU.

In Japan, the need for GDPR compliance is slowly but steadily becoming evident to businesses. TÜV Rheinland Japan will initially focus on rolling out its GDPR Gap Assessment Service for existing clients. “We are already in the process of delivering this service to some of our key clients in Japan, and expect more to come forwards and seek our assistance”, added Tobias Schweinfurter, President & CEO TÜV Rheinland Japan.
