Daimler AG planned for a comprehensive energy management certification. Regarding IATF 16949, ISO 9001, EMAS, ISO 14001 and ISO 50001, Daimler AG wanted to review their overall quality, environment, and energy management systems, and meet the goal of compliance with local regulations.
To enhance access to markets in Europe and China for their largest van production plant in Düsseldorf and subsidiary in Ludwigsfelde, specific requirements of the German Federal Motor Vehicle Transport Authority (KBA) and the Chinese certification system (CCC) were taken into consideration.

Initial situation and requirements
Daimler AG and TÜV Rheinland decided on inspection procedures running in parallel. For the inspectors, this meant extra effort in the planning phase.
“The combined certification with TÜV Rheinland was a pilot project in Daimler’s production network. I am certain that this example will set a precedent and that other sites will also follow suit. All in all, combined certifications are the future, since increasing globalisation and the growth of economic relationships with companies in more and more countries are demanding compliance with specific standards more frequently. If this trend continues, the simultaneous appraisal and certification of multiple standards will become practically indispensable,” says Peter Mengel, responsible for quality management as a senior manager at Daimler.
Solutions, results
The increased effort in planning bilateral coordination ultimately paid off for Daimler AG in the implementation phase. Through these combined audits overall time spent was 20% less than anticipated. Additionally, employees were subject to far less frequent interruption to their work.
Both employees and management found that the combined audit added more value in less overall time. Additionally, the whole process did not require any production delays.
