AIWAYS U5, a smart electric SUV, has been granted a European Whole Vehicle Type-Approval (WVTA) certificate. Two AIWAYS U5 cars just completed a 53-day driving test of 15,022 kilometers across the Eurasian continent, from Xi’an to Frankfurt, where the electric cars captured everyone’s attention at the certification ceremony in Frankfurt.

Alex Klose, AIWAYS Executive Vice President for Overseas Operations, received the "AIWAYS U5" EU WVTA certificate from Gunnar Pflug, Western European Business Field Manager of TÜV Rheinland Type Approval and Engineering. It marks the official entry of AIWAYS into the European market.

AIWAYS is an emerging Chinese start-up company focusing on new-energy smart vehicles. Established in 2017, the company targets leading overseas markets with a bold brand promise of “revolutionary quality, made in China”. The flagship model, AIWAYS U5, has already won the markets’ favor with its ultra-long driving range, stylish design, smart driving system, and connected devices.

Pflug congratulated AIWAYS for being granted the WVTA certificate: “China's new energy vehicles industry is now in full swing. Chinese companies need to go global by developing products that meet international standards. TÜV Rheinland has the most comprehensive capabilities to provide testing and certification services for the automobile industry. We look forward to using our expertise and experience to support ambitious Chinese companies like AIWAYS to go the distance in the international market.”

Alex Klose, AIWAYS Executive Vice President for Overseas Operations, commented: “Meeting European regulatory requirements is an essential step towards achieving our goals. We are delighted that, with support from our partner TÜV Rheinland, we have been able to achieve European homologation in all aspects for the U5. Our all-electric SUV is a statement of intent as we aim to bring affordable, connected, and premium electric transport to the European market next year.”

TÜV Rheinland has over 100 years of experience in automobile inspection and certification. It has been supporting China’s automotive industry development for a long time, with professional services and reliable expertise. When AIWAYS was established, TÜV Rheinland conducted the EMC test and electrical performance test for the manufacturer, and helped it to develop high-quality, international-standard products. Now, TÜV Rheinland has granted AIWAYS the EU WVTA certificate, which facilitates the opening of the EU market for AIWAYS.

The WVTA certification is an automotive product certification in accordance with the EU motor vehicle type approval framework directive. The certification covers a wide range of aspects, such as: vehicle safety performance, environmental protection, cruising range, emission levels, etc. It is the most stringent standard among the major automotive certification systems in the world. The certification keeps evolving by constantly upgrading the standards and adopting new requirements. Regulation (EU) 2018/858 will come into effect from September 1, 2020, which will include CO2 calculation and monitoring, Euro 6d emission, in service conformity, market surveillance, etc. This will also be included into the inspection list, making it even more stringent for car and parts manufacturers.

With decades of experience and accreditations in all major markets, TÜV Rheinland offers an integrated automotive industry solution. It remains committed to improving vehicle safety, performance as well as operation and quality management systems for the automotive industry. TÜV Rheinland is currently authorized by the several road traffic authorities in the EU market, including KBA of Germany, RDW of the Netherlands, SNCH of Luxembourg, NSAI of Ireland, STI of Sweden and CSDD of Latvia.
